Removing Barriers and Improving Conditions for Disabled Students at Gateway Community College

1.Gateway Community College does not have accessible doors from the parking garage into the building. The majority of students enter through here and handicapped spaces are placed next to them at every level. This is definitely a barrier to access for the handicapped, as well as against Federal ADA law.

2. Some schools are allocating designated space for physically disabled students, or students that are just stressed or not feeling well to rest. Some schools even offer physical therapy for those with chronic health conditions. In order for some with physical challenges to success in college we need a place to rest in between classes. Right now there is absolutely no where to lay down except for the hard floor, contradictory for anyone feeling unwell or in pain, and impossible for those in a wheelchair. Therefore, I am asking for support to get the school to create an area that would be conducive to rest between classes. This room should also be encourage to be used by any student that would like to meditate or just take some time to relax and clear their minds.

3. Currently, if a student forgets their student ID, as perhaps one with a cognitive, mental or physical illness may easily do, they cannot park in the student garage and are made to walk a significant distance. A simple solution is to allow students with documented needs to have a second ID or a car sticker.

4. Many of us would like to see healthy food options offered by the schools cafe. Currently they sell a lot of non-nutritious junk. These types of foods and snacks contain all the ingredients perfect for SAD (Standard American Diet) containing carcinogens, neurotoxins, endocrine disrupters, and high levels of sugar and unhealthy fats that cause obesity and diabetes. These food choices are not just toxic for the general student population, they offer very little to those on restricted health diets, mainly those who are gluten free. So I ask that a change be made to make this cafe more aware and sensitive to the needs of those on alternative diets. We all have the right to better nutrition in this school.
