Save Doñana National Park!

  • by: Margherita Bandini
  • recipient: Isabel Garcia Tejerina, Minister of Agriculture and Environment

Doñana National Park is a protected region in the south of Spain, home to over 300 species of birds, migrating and local, and iconic mammals such as the Iberian lynx and Eurasian otter. Considered a unique habitat and the largest nature reserve in Europe, it was declared World Heritage Site by UNESCO.

Now, Doñana is going through a critical stage due to overexploitation of the aquifer. Mismanagement of the water resources prevents the natural flooding of marshes, and this in turn dramatically affects all species of birds present and biodiversity as a whole. Water is taken in huge quantities for agricultural uses and is polluted upriver by mining companies.

The animals, plants and habitats in Doñana National Park are in imminent danger.

We demand that the government act urgently and forcefully implementing the Water Framework Directive to save this natural treasure.

Estimada Ministra,
