Food guide in schools

The food guide and it's pyramid has been taught in schools for YEARS!! BUT, with so many known allergies, food intolerances and all the different food lifestyles that now exist in households, the food guide should NOT be taught in school! For some, the food guide goes against all that parents try to teach their kids when it comes to food. For kids who can't have gluten, that food pyramid can quickly discourage them. For families who choose to go vegan, that food guide is obsolete! Learning to read labels and proper nutrition CAN AND SHOULD be taught at home!! When my 8 year old son comes home and starts telling me that he can't eat an unsweetened applesauce because it contains sugars or my 12 year old niece tells me that the number of calories in her LARABAR is too much...clearly the schools are NOT teaching labels properly!! There IS A DIFFERENCE between natural and refined sugars, as well as healthy and unhealthy calories!!! There's also the situation of schools telling parents what they can and cannot put in their kids' lunches!?! If I choose to NOT give wheat (whole grain or not), the teachers SHOULD NOT be telling my kid that their lunch is incomplete...because the food guide says so?!?! No way!! Food habits start at home and it should remain that way!! Now, I'm not saying that if kids are coming to school with junk food everyday that the teachers shouldn't say anything...that's a whole other thing!!

Bottom line is that there are so many different household lifestyles and food habits, that the teachings of what should and shouldn't be on your plate should be the responsibility of the parents!!
