Demand Anti-Slavery Lawsuit Against ICE Private Prisons Be Allowed to Go to Court!

For some time now, it has been the practice of Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) to keep detained undocumented immigrants in private prisons. Part of this practice has included putting inmates to work; according to a civil rights lawsuit, these inmates are sometimes being paid less than $1 per hour (or not paid at all) for their labor.

This is slave labor, pure and simple.

The United States' top private prison contractors are watching lawsuits like this one closely and are keenly aware that if they lose their businesses will suffer dearly. As such, they have called in favors from lawmakers to whom thousands of dollars in campaign donations have been made on their behalf.

A letter signed by 18 Republican representatives argues that these ICE prisons aren't violating labor laws because these inmates are not technically "employees." It also explains that prisoners should not expect to be exempt from labor; as the letter's author claims, the work helps keep inmates manageable.

This letter has been sent to Attorney General Sessions, Labor Secretary Acosta and Acting Director of ICE Homan. It asks that they exert their influence to see Novoa v. GEO Group dismissed before it goes to court.

Tell these three men to opt against interfering with this lawsuit and that regardless of the legal gymnastics used, forced labor at the hands of the U.S. government in 2018 is completely unacceptable.
