Stop Funding the Coup D’etat in Egypt

On July 3rd 2013 the Egyptian military carried out a coup d’etat overthrowing a democratically elected government killing hundreds of civilian protestors. Ironically this was done the day before Independence Day, by a military supported by the government of the United States.

Every year the U.S gives over $1.5 billion in aid to Egypt. $1.3 billion of this money is earmarked for military use.

U.S. law states that aid must be stopped if a country’s “duly elected head of government is deposed by military coup d'etat or decree” or overthrown in “a coup d'etat or decree in which the military plays a decisive role.”

This was a military coup d’etat against a democratically elected government. U.S aid funded this bloody coup d’etat. To continue to send aid to the Egyptian military is not only illegal, but also unethical.

If we continue to send aid to the Egyptian military, after they violently overthrew a democratically elected government, we are sending a message against democracy, the rule of law, and the hope of freedom itself.

Tell President Obama to stop funding to the military government in Egypt and respect democracy.

Dear President Obama,

Stop sending aid to the Egyptian military.

The democratically elected Egyptian government was overthrown in a coup d’etat on the 3rd of July this year.

U.S law states that if a "duly elected head of government is deposed by military coup d'etat or decree" or overthrown in "a coup d'etat or decree in which the military plays a decisive role." Then aid must be stopped.

This is not just a legal issue.

We all believe that governments should be formed by the will of the people, not the will of the few. An election was held and a majority winner found, they in turn formed a legitimate government.

By funding a military that overthrew an elected government you are acting against democracy. Just as we accept the victories of our political opponents at home, we must strive to do so abroad.
