Put an image in the Streets Dept header!

As it stands today, Philadelphia has one of the best street art blogs America, but what we don't have is the best street art blog header images. No, the best street art blog header images in America are on Brooklyn Street Art. Brooklyn – of all places!

And what a better place for the nation's best street art blog header than on Streets Dept. The standardbearer of Philadelphia street art, and currently a 660 x 180 pixel blank spot, the header of the Streets Dept blog is the ideal canvas for such a project!

To the people concerned about the fact that the website has been carefully designed with a minimalist look, my reply to is simple: there’s nothing we could do, or would do, that would ever harm this website. Period. It wouldn’t be allowed, for one, but also, that’s not what I’m suggesting. This isn't a brick wall we're talking about, it's a website, and the header could be changed back to white at any time without any longterm damage to the site's design. If we want this to happen, there is a way. I think it’s important to keep in mind that the Street Dept blog has been celebrated for its innovative spirit from the day it went online. Celebrated for the fact that the person who built it last year was looking forward. And that’s all I’m suggesting we do today.

I think having the best street art blog header in America on Philadelphia's premiere street art blog would be such a powerful statement for the arts in this city. And the best part? What other blog in what other city could ever compete with that? What other street art blog has a
660 x 180 worth of blank pixel space in their header? It’s such a great opportunity for our city's blog to do something dynamic, something innovative, and something no other blog could ever do.

The best part of all this is that this project comes at the same time as Streets Dept's efforts to put a mural on the back of PSFS building, so Conrad is already warmed up to the sometimes controversial idea of people to petitioning owners of private space to determine how that privately owned space is decorated. He's even said to me on Twitter, "if you can get a 180 signatures, I'll post a 600x400 image of your choosing for 24 hours at the top of my blog." All this petition propses is something slightly different to what he has already agreed to.

Logistically, here's what I'm proposing:

          • The blank 660 x 180 pixel section of the Streets Dept header be turned into a space for art.

          • I, Curly, will provide Streets Dept with the first image to put in their new header/art space.

          • My image will run for one week.

          • After one week, Streets Dept can return their header to a blank white space, or they can keep my image up, or they can begin rotating the images in their header with images of their choosing.
