Kaleden Lakehill Road Pedestrian Corridor Planning

Whereas Lakehill Road in Kaleden is a narrow heavily used road that provides a community connection between Skaha Lake, the Community Park and KVR trail, with the elementary school,  fire hall, community hall, library, post office and general store, and various local businesses;

And whereas Lakehill Road has no pedestrian corridor and is dangerous to school children, mothers with strollers, disabled persons in wheelchairs, walkers with pets on leashes, horses and riders, cyclists, recreational users, and all other pedestrians that choose to walk as a mode of transportation;

And whereas the Ministry of Transportation views Lakehill Road as past its normal life and due for a complete rebuild, including installation of drainage;

And whereas the Ministry of Transportation will not fund a pedestrian corridor as part of reconstruction of Lakehill Road, as it views such corridors to be the financial responsibility of local government;

And whereas it is prudent to ensure that a pedestrian corridor is properly planned as part of any future reconstruction of Lakehill Road, and done well in advance of such construction to allow opportunities to seek other Provincial funding sources and cost savings thru coordination with the Ministry of Transportation rebuild project;

And whereas the rural area of West Bench recently undertook such a study  which enabled them to apply and be approved for an Infrastructure grant of nearly $500,000 for a pedestrian corridor in conjunction with its roadways;

We the undersigned petition the RDOS to fund $6,000 for a conceptual engineering study (such as that undertaken for West Bench) to look at the feasibility and cost of constructing a pedestrian corridor along Lakehill Road in Kaleden, as part of a cost-shared project with the Ministry of Transportation.
