Ban the Box Suffolk County, New York

Research shows that disclosing an arrest (which is illegal to ask) or conviction on a job application reduces the likelihood of being called for an interview by at least 50%, regardless of an applicant's merits or the relevance of such conviction to job duties. One in three Americans has a criminal conviction. Furthermore, Suffolk County has the largest parole population in New York State, representing people with at least one felony conviction. Therefore, by removing the conviction history "check box" from applications individuals with a criminal conviction will have a greater chance to seek employment. Studies indicate that stable employment is one of the best predictors of post-conviction success. In the United States, Ban the Box has been adopted in 33 states and over 150 cities and counties. We need your support! Please help us to get this vital legislation passed.

Thank you to those who were able to make the strategy meeting yesterday! For those who could not- that's ok! NEXT TUESDAY is when we really need you! Whether you are coming in support or to testify WE NEED EVERYONE TO COME! BRING A FRIEND!
HEARING IS TUESDAY MAY 14TH, STARTING AT 6:30 PM (try to get there 15 minutes early) AT THE LEGISLATIVE BUILDING LOCATED ON THE COMPLEX AT 725 VETERANS HIGHWAY, HAUPPAUGE- I look forward to seeing everyone there!

We will go over tips, preparing your testimony, and answer questions
COME ONE, COME ALL!
If you can't make it, remember the public hearing is May 14th, 6:30 at the Legislative building on vets highway in Hauppauge- you don't have to testify, but please come in support!

Join us May 8th at Touro Law School, 225 Eastview Drive, Central Islip,Room 206, 12:30- 2 pm
Let's plan to get this bill passed! If you cannot make it, it's ok- we still need you to call your legislators and try to come on May 14th- even if you do not testify- be there in support!

2. Send in written testimony.Type or write a statement in support, include your name and address, and it can be emailed before May 14th to: Jason.richberg@suffolkcountyny.gov
3. Come to the hearing, and bring a friend! We will have the opportunity to testify again! May 14th, 6:30pm.. we need to bring people directly affected by discriminatory practices, people who support the bill, & those of us working with the re-entry population. We had 21 people testify last time let's try for 50 this time!

We now, more than ever, need to rally and get our supporters calling, writing, and showing up at the next public hearing on May 14th at 6:30pm, Hauppauge legislative building

Here are the steps you can take:
1. Call your Legislators! Better yet, meet with them - they need to be educated on the issues and understand their misconceptions about the bill, use the fact sheet attached.
