Stop feral camels from killing Australian wildlife

Feral camels browse threatened plants and valuable food sources for Australia’s precious native animals. They also drink waterholes dry or fall in them and prevent native animals including Kangaroos, Emus and Dingos from drinking water. Australian scientists have recorded this. The federal government knows this is happening and is not doing nearly enough to prevent the mass destruction of Australia’s inland deserts and suffering to wildlife.  Many aboriginal people are appalled by the destruction of their lands and the slow death of many native animals no longer able to access precious water supplies.   The camels in many cases are too remote for them to be moved on over long distances and in hot conditions this would be a major animal welfare issue, particularly if the females are with calf.

Dear Australian Prime Minister,

Feral camels browse threatened plants and valuable food sources for Australia’s precious native animals. They also drink waterholes dry or fall in them and prevent native animals including Kangaroos, Emus and Dingos from drinking water.

Your government is not doing nearly enough to prevent the mass destruction of Australia’s inland deserts. Many aboriginal people are appalled by the destruction of the ecosystem and death of many native animals no longer able to access precious water supplies.

We ask that more is done to remove feral camels from the landscape humanely and considering the welfare of the camels.
