Protect Russia’s Western Caucasus and wildlife

Imagine an area untouched by humans, a place of majestic scenery that encompasses lush, verdent lowlands and sweeping glaciers. Incredibly, this dreamlike place actually exists within Europe, in Russia’s Western Caucasus. The World Heritage site within the Caucasus region hosts an incredible variety of habitats and wildlife, and is the only large mountain area in Europe that remains untouched by human intervention. Now it is at risk.

The UNESCO World Heritage Committee has expressed concern regarding the Western Caucasus, saying that the construction of large-scale infrastructure could lead to the site to being put on the List of World Heritage in Danger. WWF is concerned that Russia's promises to protect the area as part of its 2014 Sochi Olympic bid will now be undermined by plans to expand ski facilities. Please sign this petition to demand that Russia are kept to their word by the International Olympic Committe, so that this unique wild area remains protected.

In particular, worries are arising regarding the reintroduction of endangered Persian leopards into the area.  “We had hoped to release these very special leopards into a secure environment. Instead they will enter the unknown,” said Igor Chestin, CEO of WWF-Russia. “The future of Western Caucasus is hanging in the balance, but it is not too late to restore a positive natural legacy for the Sochi games. The International Olympic Committee should insist that promises made then are kept now.”

Please sign this petition to demand that the IOC intervene and protect these irreplaceable habitats. If enough people sign, it will send a loud message that the international community wants the Olympics to hold true to ethics, integrity and sustainability.

The International Olympic Committee:

I am writing today to urge you to insist that Russia hold true to its promise to conserve the Western Caucasus and its heritage site as part of its Olympics bid.

The area is utterly unique, is a world heritage site, and contains a number of rich and varied habitats which are now at risk from ski site developments.
