Demand Illinois State Highway Keep Animals Off Highways Through Protective Fencing & Other Solutions

  • by: SUE LEE

This petition is a dual purpose and asks you to sign and share it everywhere in an effort to end or at least reduce road kill on all our roads and highways in Illinois. First, we need to ask the State Highway Department along with conservationist to put up fencing all along the highways so that animals in forest and neighborhood areas would be barred from entering the roads where they will be killed. I also think it is appalling when an animal is killed; the body is never removed until it becomes so badly decomposed and indescribable. Animals deserve some kind of respect and should not be left on our roads like a piece of trash. Lets petition for changes on keeping animals barred from the fast-paced roads and, if one gets hit, please call animal control to dispose of the body humanely!

It is devastating how many animals are killed on the road each year, often causing fatalities to humans as well. Most of us will do all we can to avoid hitting a defenseless animal; not everyone because I assure you there are those that will hit them purposely, but sometimes it is avoidable at all costs. Safety while driving is always a number one concern. However, it just seems as though there are too many animals on the roads and highways.

With construction, development and improvements in Illinois, animals are forced from their forestry areas and are not aware that a highway is a dangerous option. When construction continues, tearing down animal habitats, fencing should be put up along highways so that animals are forced to stay away from them. Barring wooded and neighborhood areas with some type of fencing would save many animals from wandering onto dangerous roads and highways that would take their lives and possibly causing accidents with humans as well.

There have been some successful solutions developed, according to Canada and Europe. According to these experts, wildlife crossings could produce tangible results on all fronts. A spokesperson stated that they spent billions of dollars running over wildlife. Why not put those monies, quartered it and consider 200 animal crossings a year. Some of these solutions could drastically reduce the road kill problem, along with the use of animal detection systems. In a study led by the Oregon Department of Transportation, it found that the benefits of these systems outweigh the costs and have the potential to be applied on a wide scale.

There are options out there to reduce the number of animals killed and humans killed or injured when making contact with or avoiding them. Additionally, when animals lose their lives, their bodies remain there to be trampled over and over again; very disrespectful in my opinion! We need to encourage Illinois and other states as well to incorporate protective solutions so that the number of road kill incidents is reduced and if it does occur, someone needs to dispose of the bodies that do meet their ends! Please sign and share this petition worldwide so that we can persuade Illinois to incorporate solutions to reduce the amount of road kill on our highways along with a system to pick up and dispose of animals that succumb to the traffic!!

Illinois Governor Pat Quinn and the State Highway Department – We urge you to please look into ways to stop and/or reduce the number of road kill incidents on our roads and highways. Because of an increase in production, there is a decrease in animal habitat, causing them to seek other areas for food and cover. As a result, they cross roads that put them and humans in danger due to accidents. Please look into some protective fencing or other solutions as set forth in Canada in Europe so that animals can remain off our highways.

When an animal does meet its end due to a vehicle altercation, it is also very disrespectful and disgusting to allow that living being to remain there to decompose like a piece of trash. Someone should be responsible in picking up deceased animals on or along the road ways and dispose in a humane fashion. Often times, deceased animals are someone’s pet that “made a wrong turn.” Please instill some solutions to these problems and protect the animals that exist within our state.
