Save Historical St Paul’s Anglican Church Bankstown

We call upon the Anglican Diocese of Sydney & Anglican Church Property Trust to urgently seek heritage protection for St Paul’s Anglican Church from demolition.

St Pauls Anglican Church has served the region for over a century as the one of the oldest historical churches in Bankstown. It is also a sacred site as a number of WWII ex-servicemen who have memorials within the church.

The church was constructed with open truss ceiling, bell tower completed with grand organ and magnificent stained glass windows donated by parishioners and families and executed by Mr. Martin van der Toorn Sydney. In 2012 Archbishop Dr. Peter Jenson attended St Paul’s church service and congratulated St Paul’s on its centenary celebration.

Tragically, St Paul’s parish council and parishioners voted to support a plan to demolish the church building, incorporating the church into a commercial and residential tower.

The Anglican Church building portrays a dedicated & iconic place of worship that is in keeping with what ‘the Church’ has held dear for millennia and to remove it would foster the decline of the church as such. There are too many our national heritage icons being neglected and forgotten, destroyed in the name of “development”. It is our birthright to keep our rich history alive and save this irreplaceable gift entrusted by the generations past and for generations to come.

Bankstown Council is in favour of more high density living on French Ave, where the street is less than 200 metres long has already constructed several high rise apartments there but now has application approved for another 11 levels 66 units to be built on a block of land currently just accommodating 2 houses. This will directly impact survival of St Paul’s Anglican Church Bankstown and nearby Bankstown Community College!!!

Thank you all for signing and sharing this petition and words of encouragement. This is a Wake-Up Call to Anglican Church and Our Nation!
St Paul’s Church once was very vibrant church with many Parish activities such as Sunday School, The Guild of St Paul, the Mother’s Union, Men’s Society, Soccer Club, as well as the Senior and Youth Choir. St Paul’s Choir School was founded on the site and evolved into today’s Georges River Grammar.

St Paul's Anglican Church is also a sacred site as war memorial. Alan Richard Maunsel is one of a number of ex-servicemen who have memorials with the church. He died of injuries when HMAS was bombed during World War II.
