Alaska Legislature treat all Sockeye Fire victims equally

  • by: Terry Morache

The Sockeye Fire on June15, 2015 devastated the Alaskan Community of Willow. Home to many elite and recreational dog mushers, many lost everything and some were uninsured. The State of Alaska declared a state of emergency for Willow allowing fire victims to receive disaster aid. The problem is the applicants for these funds are being treated differently and unfairly. Insured applicants are allowed to accept their insurance money and still receive their full disaster allotment. However, the uninsured are being penalized. If they accept any aid before receiving state funds their state disaster funds will be reduced accordingly. The uninsured are the most needy yet are being treated the worst. Sign this petition and tell the Alaska Legislature to treat the recipients of the state funds equally and fairly.

Governor Walker, Senator Dunleavy and the Alaska State Legislature

We the undersigned are sending you this petition to treat the uninsured equally in the distribution of emergency disaster funds. As current policies and procedures are the insured can receive aid and insurance funds without any penalty to the amount of disaster funds received. Yet if the uninsured receive donations the amount of the state disaster funds is reduced. The way the state is managing this will leave many homeless going into the long Alaskan winter
