Make Election Day a National Holiday

  • by: Sue Lee

Every eligible voter deserves a fair chance to vote in America's democracy.

In the 2014 elections, just 37 percent of eligible voters cast a ballot. Many had a good excuse: they had to be at work

Limited voting windows can reduce voter turnout by forcing working people to choose between their paycheck and their ability to have a say in who represents them in public offices.

That's why we are urging the U. S. Senate to pass Senator Bernie Sanders' new Democracy Day Act of 2015, legislation to make Election Day a national holiday. By making the day a national holiday, the bill would give more people the opportunity to vote. It would also help reduce lines during peak hours, making it easier for working people to have their say about the leaders who represent

As Senator Sanders told the crowd at a recent rally:

"We should be doing everything possible to make it easier for people to participate in the political process. Election Day should be a national holiday so that everyone has the time and opportunity to vote. While this would not be a cure-all, it would indicate a national commitment to create a vibrant democracy."

With such busy lives, many of us can find it difficult to find the time to represent our homes, family, community, and our country in federal elections. Making Election Day a national holiday will help us make our voices heard and ensure we have the time to cast ballots for leaders who will represent our interests in Washington, DC.

Help promote American democracy — tell your US Senators to support the Democracy Day Act of 2015!

Dear Senator,

I strongly urge you to do everything you can to pass The Democracy Day Act of 2015, legislation Senator Bernie Sanders has introduced to make Election Day a national holiday.

This important bill would give more working people the opportunity to vote, since workers would no longer have to choose between their paychecks and their ballots. A national holiday would also encourage more people to love and support our country.
