NH – Move Ahead With Tougher Animal Cruelty Laws %26 Repercussions to Stop the Abuse

  • by: Sue Lee

Animal cruelty is an ongoing, never-ending cruel act against poor defenseless animals and unless laws, charges and penalties are more stringent to make an impact, the abuse will never end. It is shocking to think that some people can literally look in those loving and pleading eyes while harming the animal, often with fatal results. New Hampshire is making attempts to save animals after such an act occurred where Bruno the dog was taken into the woods, shot several times and left there to die in a cruel manner. You can read more on this case and the state’s efforts at http://www.nh.gov/humane/documents/animal-cruelty-manual.pdf, as well as other laws and charges nationwide, https://www.animallaw.info/statute/nh-cruelty-cruelty-animals, & http://www.straypetadvocacy.org/PDF/AnimalCrueltyLaws.pdf

Often times, people choose a cruel method like that of Bruno rather than other options in the dog’s best interest. Despite the brutality, this owner was not even charged because of a lack of specific wording in the current legal statute on animal cruelty. That certainly needs to be changed to ensure that any and all acts of animal cruelty and abuse be a Class B Felony that comes with serious repercussions like longer jail sentences, higher fees, possible acts of community service hours and also being placed on an animal cruelty registry to be shared nationwide with anyone within the animal business such as breeders, shelters, medical care and sales. Such abusers also need to be banned for a lifetime working with, caring for or owning animals for the rest of their life. There shouldn’t be any second chances because it should be common knowledge that abusing an animal, just like abusing a human is wrong and unjust. There is never a reason to intentionally harm an animal.

The effort in this petition is to urge the New Hampshire Legislators to strengthen their animal cruelty laws, charges and penalties that will make an impact on society and stop the abuse. Strict measurements need to be taken and fully enforced in order to put an end to such animal cruelty.
