Texas Senate: END Bill That Allows Doctors to Lie to Women!

Last week, the a Texas Senate Committee discussed a bill that would allow the government to decide what information a doctor can keep from a woman about her unborn child.

It passed. Unanimously.

According to the bill, if the fetus has severe disabilities, the doctor would be able to legally withhold this information from her. Especially if the doctor had a sense that the woman may have an abortion, they could intentionally not tell her about the health of her fetus.

For a state that claims to be distrustful of government, this sure puts a lot of power over women's bodies in the hands of legislators. With only 19% of the state legislature being comprised of women - lower than the national average - it seems this bill will simply give men another way to decide what women do with their bodies.

Futhermore, this bill would make it nearly impossible for Texans to sue medical providers for withholding critical information about their bodies.

For particularly vulnerable women, the risk of having a baby with severe disabilities - an expensive, tedious task - can mean spiraling into poverty. This results in even worse health outcomes, both for the mother and child.

This piece of legislation gives male doctors, and the overwhelmingly-male Texas government, the ability to impose their religious beliefs on female patients. Sign this petition now to urge Texan lawmakers: do not allow doctors to lie to women! Protect women's rights now!
