Ask Virginia Governor to Ensure Captive Animals Live Healthy Lives

  • by: Sue Lee

Roadside zoos and other facilities are numerous with only monetary gain in mind.  Often times, the animals in these zoos get less than the perfect treatment and care they need and deserve.  Most of these animal facilities do not meet the regulations as stated by the USDA and many are running without sufficient licensing and permits.

Such is the case with roadside zoos and inappropriate animal facilities in Virginia. Our concern is the health and welfare of the animals that are kept in captivity.  The Humane Society has been avidly investigating such zoos and facilities only to find various violations along with inhumane treatment of the animals.  As they stated, some of the violations include:

    • not providing proper vet care for the sick and injured animals
    • inhumanely handling the animals, causing them distress
    • Not providing an ample supply of clean water
    • Keeping the animals in unsanitary cages without proper cleanliness
    • Other violations that affects the psychological well-being of the animals

Most of these zoos and animal facilities have one thing in mind, and that is profit and monetary gain.  The proper care of the animals is not a priority.  We are urging the Governor of Virginia to take some serious steps in changing that and protecting these animals.  You can help us in our efforts to stop the practices of roadside zoos and other such facilities by signing and sharing this petition.

Virginia Governor McCauliffe – We urge you to sign an executive order to revoke permits of any live animal display that is not only licensed by and in good standing with the USDA, but also accredited by the more reputable Association of Zoos and Aquariums.  Do whatever you can to stop the practices of these roadside zoos and other such animal facilities
