India - Get Tough on Mining Companies

  • by: Judith B.

Mining companies in India have been allowed to do just about anything they want, from destroying protected ecosystems to illegally mining on other people’s land to desecrating sacred sites to abusing human rights.

Human Rights Watch attributes this mostly to government indifference, which in combination with ineffectual regulation and widespread corruption is allowing mining companies, often foreign ones, to treat India's people and environment abysmally and break the country's laws as they please.

Enough is enough. It is time for central government to stop letting mining companies get away with things that would rightly land an individual in prison. Better regulation and more effective enforcement of that regulation must be made a priority by central government. Ask the Indian Government to get tough on mining.

We the undersigned ask that you make more effective regulation of mining companies a priority. Mining is an important part of India's economy, which if anything means that mining companies should be subject to more stringent regulations, not allowed to do as they please.

Please ensure that the environmental infractions and human rights abuses so prevalent in the industry are no longer allowed to continue. Ignoring the problem will not make it go away. This government should be looking after India's people, environment and economy, not allowing large corporations to take advantage of and abuse all three.

Thank you for your attention.
