Tell the DEA: Do NOT Make Kratom a Schedule I Substance! Stop Criminalizing Natural Medicine!

  • by: Julie Mastrine

The Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) just moved to make kratom a Schedule I substance, which would criminalize all those who use it and designate it as having no known medical use, despite the fact that many people use it to handle chronic pain, beat opioid addiction, wean off alcohol, fight depression, and relax. I personally know someone who uses kratom to handle chronic pain for which no other substance has helped.

Please sign this petition to tell the DEA and Obama: Do NOT make kratom a Schedule I substance!

Kratom is made from the leaves of a tree native to Southeast Asia that is a relative of the coffee plant. It's crushed into a tea or drank with water. Farmers and indigenous people have used it for hundreds of years. Veterans coping with PTSD, recovering alcoholics, and people with fibromyalgia are all among those who say they have benefited from the drug.

But thanks to the misguided and draconian DEA, these people will soon become criminals if they try to use the drug.

The simple fact is that the DEA profits from banning natural medicines like marijuana and now Kratom, with zero regard to the fact that these substances help people to relax, get off side effect-laden pharmaceuticals, handle chronic pain, battle depression and anxiety, and more. The government must respect its citizens' bodily autonomy and the option to choose natural medicines over pharmaceuticals.

We the undersigned urge The Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) NOT to make kratom a Schedule I substance, which would criminalize all those who use it and designate it as having no known medical use. Many Americans use kratom to handle chronic pain, beat opioid addiction, wean off alcohol, fight depression, and relax.

Farmers and indigenous people have used kratom for hundreds of years. Veterans coping with PTSD, recovering alcoholics, and people with fibromyalgia are all among those who say they have benefited from the drug.

It is misguided and draconian to make these people into criminals if they try to use the drug.

The DEA must stop profiting from banning natural medicines like marijuana and now kratom. The DEA continually demonstrates zero regard for the fact that these substances help people to relax, get off side effect-laden pharmaceuticals, handle chronic pain, battle depression and anxiety, and more. The government must respect its citizens' bodily autonomy and the option to choose natural medicines over pharmaceuticals.

BIG news! The DEA has temporarily canceled its plans to ban kratom due to public outcry! But the fight isn't over: the agency will take public comments through Dec. 1 & will ask the FDA to issue a scheduling recommendation. The DEA could still ban the plant after that. The kratom ban goes into effect Sept. 30! We've already sent tens of thousands of signatures to the DEA, and we need one last push to show the DEA we don't want them to criminalize a helpful plant! Please share this petition on Facebook to encourage your friends to sign: http://bit.ly/2dA95yG
