NYC: Make Early Childcare Centers Safer

Two baby sisters, aged one and two, died agonising deaths when a radiator exploded in their room in a homeless shelter in New York. Little Scylee and Ibanez were rushed to hospital but could not be saved. Neighbors say that their young parents were devoted to the girls, and are utterly devastated.

New York City Comptroller Scott.M Stringer said: "we've lost two more of our youngest, most vulnerable New Yorkers".

In October, Stringer revealed findings that many city shelters with early-age childcare centers are failing to meet safety standards.

New York City is facing unprecedented levels of homelessness, and as a result there are more children than ever relying on the shelter system. We have to keep these young lives safe.

Please sign this petition to demand that the government of New York City improves the safety of early-age childcare centres by increasing dedicated funding, support and training for meeting safety standards.

The government of New York City:

Following October's revelations that many early-age childcare centres in New York's homeless shelters are failing to meet safety standards, I am writing to demand that the issue be addressed.

Please commit to dedicated funding, support and training for early-age childcare centres to ensure that they meet safety centres.

With homelessness on the rise and so many babies and toddlers relying on NYC's shelters, it's vital that these vulnerable children are protected.
