Change the first day of the 2016/2017 school year to September 7, 2016

Based upon the 2016/2017 school calendar, the South Plainfield public schools are to open for the new school year on Friday, September 2nd, with a scheduled delayed opening on Tuesday, September 6th.
We are asking that the first day of classes be changed to Wednesday, September 7th.
For children going into kindergarten, it is a difficult transition and having to go to school for one day and have 4 days off in between will make it even more difficult.
In addition, many families in town take vacations the week before Labor Day and will now have to shorten their vacations or have their child/children miss the first day of classes.
It makes more sense to take other days during the year, such as the Tuesday after Memorial Day or one of the additional days from Spring Break than to have children start school on a Friday before a long weekend.
