STOP HARSH SENTENCING.... Covington serves 11 life sentences (+) for non-violent offense.

TAXPAYERS ARE PUNISHED FOR UNFAIR SENTENCING LAWS.

The Sentence
A ridiculous sentence for NON-VIOLENT OFFENSE. Aaron Covington is serving 11 life sentences, 8 – 30 year sentences and 1 – 20 year sentence.

The Cost
The federal prison system now houses 210,000 people at a cost of $6 billion. Between 1982 and 2007, the cost of federal corrections increased 475%, even after adjusting for inflation (The Sentencing Project). The annual cost of incarcerating one inmate is over $22,000 and rising.

The Prison budgets increase vs. Higher education budgets that decrease
Between 1987 and 2007, the nation's prison population tripled, growing by 1 million people. During the last two decades, state spending on prisons grew by 127%, six times the rate of spending on higher education (Prison Spending Bleeds Our Education System).

Tell regulators we need better resolutions to end mass incarceration. Parole programs, work-release, or study programs will allow non-violent offenders to prepare for law-abiding and contributory lives. Stop harsh sentencing today.

Dear Mr. President & Congressman Bobby Scott:

My name is: Aaron "A-man" Covington and I am serving 11 life sentences, 8 – 30 year sentences and 1 – 20 year sentence for a NON-VIOLENT offense. I am in need of your support for a United States Sentence Commutation release. I am using this vehicle humbly requesting the President of the United States: Barack Obama to release me by commuting my sentence to time-served. I encourage you to read on to learn how I was over-charged, over-sentenced, and why I'm ready to reenter society. Please allow yourself to be open-minded before judging me and making a decision that will impact my life.

On April 13, 1999, I was arrested and charged along with six others in a federal indictment.  I was charged with a number of charges despite the fact there was no physical evidence. The charges were based on recollections of memories and allegations that lead to a harsh sentencing. My charges consisted of twenty counts: one count of conspiracy to possess with intent distribute and distribute crack/cocaine, eighteen counts of possession with intent to distribute and/or to distribute crack/cocaine, and one count of money laundering. I was charged with the most counts in the indictment...five times more counts than the said-to-be leaders.

Specifically, my case was neglected of any type of physical evidence wire-taps, video or audio recordings. The only evidence that was used against me came from witnesses providing testimony in exchange for immunity and/or sentence reductions from the prosecution. All of my charged offenses are generic in form and solely based upon the unclearness of witnesses memories alleging individual drug transactions involving me in possession with intent and distribution charges with no specific dates or times...thus, making the charged offenses indefensible. Today, serving 11 life sentences, 8 – 30 year sentences and 1 – 20 year sentence for a NON-VIOLENT offense that lacked any means of physical evidence. This is my life. I need your support to shed some light on unfair sentencing. This is all in public records.

I accept full responsibility for making poor decisions to sell drugs. I am sincerely apologetic for any individuals that were affected by my negative conduct. The only thing I am requesting is fairness because my sentence was extremely too harsh for a non-violent offense!!!

Thirteen years of my life has passed while being incarcerated in a federal prison. Often I awaken and ask myself: "Is this how my life is suppose to end"? However, with maturity and experience, I know my life is destined for a positive ending.

I have learned how to overcome adverse situations through education. I instruct several classes to include Effective Communication, Music Industry, Recidivism: Get out and Stay out and Public Speaking. I am a volunteer tutor preparing inmates for GED testing. I am a member of 3rd Degree Community Builders and Unity In Motion. Both organizations educate inmates on getting out and staying out by improving oneself morally as well as rehabilitating oneself thru education in areas such as keys of leadership, entrepreneurship, availability of jobs for ex-offenders, government funding for ex-felons and qualifications for such funding.

The level of education and training I have received at USP Lee is (has been) remarkable. I have taken an active leadership role to give back & help others while being incarcerated. I tutor inmates for GED preparation exams. I have organized & implemented a number of programs at USP Lee to prevent inmates from becoming repeat offenders. I am the co-editor for anti-bullying children’s book. Last, my natural talent as a poet has inspired me to help others through public speaking and my own experiences.

I have paid my debt to society. I am ready to become a productive member in society. I invite you to visit my Facebook page to view my certificates of accomplishment, involvement in inmate organizations and letters of support.

Today, I ask that you help make a difference in my life by signing my petition for a United States sentence commutation release.

Regards,

Aaron K. Covington
