Please sign and share this petition worldwide so that South Africa can take better care of the endangered and exotic animals they ship abroad. Recently they shipped more than 400 endangered amphibians and reptiles have died from dehydration and improper shipping, according to animal inspectors. There needs to be better regulations so that they animals are shipped safely, with food and water so they can ensure a healthy trip for all.

It appears that South Africa was exporting hundreds of exotic animals to the United States for human pleasure in our country. Many of these animals were found crammed in two small crates; shipped in deplorable conditions. The creatures appeared to arrive from Madagascar without any food or water. They were discovered by an inspector of the National Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals due to horrible smells. Most of the animals were dead on arrival, already decomposing.

Among the animals were 30 different species of frogs, chameleons, lizards and toads and geckos. The chameleons were tied in small muslin bags, while the other reptiles and amphibians were crammed into small plastic tubs inside of the small crates about a half meter in size; one on top of the other. The animals were so crammed together that they could not even move for all those hours. The travel for these animals was extensive, with long delays and connecting flights. They were not shipped properly as required for live transport, causing the demise of most of them with a multitude of others in poor condition with irreparable damage.

These precious lives were exported from Madagascar and destined for the exotic pet markets in the United States. Most of the animals were classified as endangered, vulnerable, or threatened, according to the Convention on the International Trade in Endangered Species. As such, it is quite disturbing that more care was not taken to protect all the animals on their long journey to this country. As investigations proceed by the NSPCA and the Department of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries, please sign and share this petition worldwide so that South Africa can take better care of the endangered and exotic animals they ship abroad.

Authorities Responsible for Wildlife Shipments in Madagascar, South Africa – You need to instill better regulations when shipping live animals across the world. These living beings should not be stuffed into such tight quarters, unable to move, breathe or have any access to water. This is a case of inhumane treatment of animals, fully characterized as animal cruelty and abuse! Please ensure a safer method of shipping live animals anywhere around the world where they get the respect and treatment they deserve to reach their destination in a healthy state.
