Western Australia: Remove the Six-Year Statute of Limitations for Child Sexual Abuse Civil Cases

Right now, in Western Australia (WA), victims of child sexual abuse must file for a civil case within six years to seek compensation for damages incurred by the abuse. This law is outdated and must change.

Often the extent to which the abuse affects a person in their life is not fully realized until after a six-year window. Children who suffered from these horrors should have more agency to seek compensation not matter how long ago the abuse took place. The effects of childhood sexual abuse can be life-long.

Currently, the WA State Parliament is looking at legislation that would remove this time restriction and allow victims to file civil cases regardless of how long ago they occurred. However, with only a few short weeks left in the parliamentary assembly to vote on the bill, and many other legislations to be voted on, this important bill could get lost in the shuffle.

Sign today to support victims of childhood sexual abuse. By signing today you are adding pressure to the Western Australian government and helping to ensure this valuable legislation passes.

To the Members of Parliament of Western Australia,

As someone who is deeply troubled by the effects of childhood sexual abuse, I implore you to pass the current legislation that is being propose that would eliminate the six-year statue of limitations on childhood sexual abuse civil cases.

Childhood sexual abuse can have lifelong consequences and victims should be able to file for compensation no matter how long ago they were abused.

Please pass this legislation immediately to allow victims of childhood sexual abuse more ability to seek compensation.
