Keep the books in The Architecture Reading Room

As architecture students, we value the resources made readily available to us in Slocum Hall's Architecture Reading Room. Those books contain information that we use on a daily basis and moving them would be a great inconvenience. It also hinders our direct access for Barbara to be able to service us (as she does immensely well) and further allows the people in administrative roles to determine the value of OUR resources for OUR education.

This letter has been given directly to the SOA Dean, the Chancellor and Bird Library.

To Whom it May Concern:

On Thursday May, 22 the Architecture Reading Room was informed that on Thursday May, 29 the majority of our books would be removed from the library in Slocum Hall in exchange for low use periodicals currently stored in Bird Library. We understand that the circulation and storage of books is a complicated matter but we do not feel that this act is in service of the students who use these books, nor is it the best solution for any party.

As architecture students, we value the resources made readily available to us in Slocum Hall's Architecture Reading Room. Our building, which ideally is a site of creativity and collaboration, operates on the ideas that knowledge will be readily available and easily dispersed to create a dialogue necessary for our school. As architecture majors we need the drawings in these books because we are strongly visually oriented. Unlike other majors on campus, architecture students can’t simply Google search critical drawings online. These books contain information that we use on a daily basis and moving them would be a great inconvenience. Our assignments from our professors constantly require us to reference these books. It also hinders our direct access for Barbara to be able to service us (as she does immensely well) and further. The movement of these books allows the people in administrative roles to determine the value of our resources for our education.

We feel that as a top ten architecture school all competitive schools of our standing have their own reading room and it should be a priority to preserve and expand our collection rather than take away from it. Statistically, our reading room is one of, if not the most, successful library on campus. We don’t want to jeopardize our standing or our education. All of our books are highly circulated, which is a testament to how integral this reading room is to our education.

We are students who speak highly of our school and value our education enough to create this petition. We want the best for our school. In one day through Facebook and other forms of social media we have received 171 names that would like to oppose the act of removing the book from the Architecture Reading Room.
