Urge the South African Government to Take Action to Halt the Catastrophic Levels of Rhino Poaching

  • by: Georgina B.

Rhino poaching in South Africa is at record levels following an 18 per cent rise in killings, according to a report in The Guardian.

Rhinos are killed for their horns, which are used in traditional Asian medicine.

In the first four months of 2015, 393 rhinos were killed, with most taken in the Kruger National Park - this is despite the appointment of a former general to oversee anti-poaching operations.

Sadly, a new record is set each year in the number of rhinos killed. Figures quoted in The Guardian allege a total of 1,215 rhinos were killed in 2014, compared with 1,004 in 2013, 668 in 2012 and 448 in 2011.

Rhinos do not deserve to slide into extinction because of human greed. Will you please join me in urging the South African government to increase armed patrols to protect rhinos from poachers, remove all rhinos from poaching 'hot spots' and to increase penalties in order to deter poachers?
