Allow Physician Assistants to provide medical services in Puerto Rico!

Puerto Rico has a shortage of doctors, yet Physician Assitants are not allowed to practice there. Physician Assistants can provide life-saving care, but arbitrary laws prevent them from being able to help the people of Puerto Rico. Please support us in changing this law so that the people of Puerto Rico can have increased access to medical services.

Some Puerto Rican citizens fly to the US to get the lifesaving care they need. Others are not so fortunate. Making a bad situation worse, the U.S. government declared a public health emergency in August 2016 due to an alarming rate of Zika infections.

• In March of 2016 one doctor was fleeing Puerto Rico every day.
• The healthcare crisis is complex, stemming from problems ranging from economic to legislative.
• PAs can be one method of alleviating PR’s strained healthcare system.

PAs are here to help. PAs have already proven their ability as providers with the Veterans Administration in Puerto Rico. The insurance that covers 68 percent of Puerto Rico’s citizens - Medicare and Medicaid – already recognizes PAs as providers and reimburses for care they provide. This allows PAs to start practicing immediately after legislation passes.

Physician Assistants are highly trained in general medicine and are part of a patient centered health care team. PAs improve access to care for underserved populations by diagnosing, treating and preventing disease. PAs are trusted health care providers, licensed to practice and authorized to prescribe medication in all 50 states, the District of Columbia and all U.S. territories with the exception of Puerto Rico.

PAs are answering the call for service across the United States. Help us make a difference during this time of extreme need in Puerto Rico by acknowledging PA licensure.
