Better treatment for victims of crime in Texas

Everyday a violent crime happens in any city of any state in the United States. Out of those violent crimes there are cases where a victim has not been treated right or properly taken care of under the laws available to them. There are always loopholes or excuses on why a victim of crime has not been fairly treated right.
I have been one of those people. Almost two years ago I was shot by a burglar. I was reporting a crime in progress to the San Antonio Police dispatch. They told me they could not find that address on their maps and asked me to get a better street reference. While I was on the phone a vehicle drove by three times and I had already felt unsafe. At this time I stated to the dispatch I do not feel safe and I need to leave. They tried to assure me police were on their way. Right after they stated that to me a person came towards me with a gun and shot it five times at me. Luckly I got away with only being hit once by a ricochet to my foot. I did this by running on one foot and a crippled second foot to the neighboring convenience store. Once there I was able to get inside and get the clerk to call the police. Police were dispatched as well as EMS and responded with utmost professionalism. It was after this when two detectives arrived when professionalism went out the window. They went on to accuse me of shooting myself in the foot and acted like they did not know of any call placed to the police about a robbery. I repeated my story over 14 times to them and not once did they offer any politeness or proffessionalism. They made threats to lock me up or do things if I did not cooperate and tell them what they wanted to hear. While I was in the EMS van and after one detective asked everyone to leave it he went as far as to grab my foot that was shot and squeeze it while making threats. Finally a EMS technician was able to get them to back off and take me to the hospital. During this time they took my girlfriend downtown and harassed her for over 2 and a ½ hours. Trying to get her to admit to the shooting or that she saw me shoot myself. They finally backed off so she could fill out a statement based on her own account and took her home. No apologies and no professionalism.
After the shooting I had news crews at my house which I never called or did an interview with. The same day one of detectives even called me and asked to come downtown for a statement. During this time I did not live in the city of San Antonio or even drive because my injured foot was the one I was shot in. He would not come to me and since then never returned my calls. I have contacted lawyers and was told nothing can be done about this situation. I also have called the Texas Attorney General’s Office and they stated I do not fall under a victim of crime statues. This was because it was not a domestic crime or that it was a crime against me and my property.
To me I am a victim of crime and I am sure there are more out there like me. Despite what happened to me that night there are other issues. I have medical debts because of this, issues with my foot because of the damage to it, and other issues mentally now. This includes the lack of justice & legal action done because of this crime that took place.
So I ask for someone to change these policies and do something for people that are victims of crime. Despite your race, sex, or any social standing we are still human beings that have rights and deserve better in this country.
