Urge UK Culture Secretary to Appoint Ofcom Recommended BME (Black & Minority Ethnic) Candidate to All-White Channel 4 Board

Recently, Ofcom recommended five candidates to the Channel 4 board. In a unusual move the Culture Secretary approved only the four white male candidates, and denied the fifth, reportedly a highly qualified BME woman.

This means Channel 4 will continue to have an all-white board and only three of 13 board members are female. As a public broadcaster - meaning it is owned by us, the public - Channel 4 should have a broad representation in their board. The appointment even goes against Channel Four's 360° Diversity Charter, which aims to have diverse representation at every level of the organisation. While the ideal candidate seemed to present herself, the Culture Secretary denied her appointment.

This blatant dismissal of a highly qualified BME woman makes one wonder at the legitimacy of the lack of appointment. It's time there was more representation for the UK's public broadcaster on its board.

Sign today to stand for more representation in the decision-makers of public broadcasting in the UK. By signing today you are sending a strong message that you believe in the power of diversity and representation.

NB Image shown is not the BME candidate recommended by Ofcom as her identity is not public.

To Seceretary Karen Bradley,

As someone who cares deeply for diversity I am greatly concerned over your recent denial of appointment to a highly qualified BME woman to the Channel 4 board. Despite this candidate being recommended by Ofcom and despite Channel 4's 360° Diversity Charter you failed to appoint any non-white people to the board.

This is unacceptable. A public broadcaster should have diverse and capable voices appointed to the board.

I call upon you to appoint the BME candidate that Ofcom recommended and help ensure more diversity in the highest levels of decision making at Channel 4.
