Stop the Proposed Town of Florida Dog Ordinance

  • by: Kris berner

The Town of Florida has proposed a strict 3 dog limit in an agricultural area. If you have or want to have more than 3 dogs, you would need to have a separate kennel building at least 1500 feet (that's more than 1/4 mile!) from the nearest building, with its own heat and water. This is not physically or financially possible for most, besides which dogs are social animals and need to be close to their people. This arrangement would cause an increase in nuisance barking and behaviors, and dogs could not be properly monitored for medical or other problems. Ironically, irresponsible breeding would be allowed as puppies under 4 months would not be counted, thus someone could have 3 pregnant females and produce as many puppies as they wanted, as long as the puppies are sold or otherwise disposed of by 4 months of age. The town would be authorized to seize dogs in violation and destroy them after 5 days. No exceptions are made, even for the dog warden or for a small established not for profit rescue (good shepherd rescue k9adopt.org which has a foster home here since 1999). No grandfather clause is planned. There is a public comment session October 20 at 6:30pm EST at the Florida Town hall, 214 Ft Hunter Rd, Amsterdam NY 12010, at which time the town is planning to pass this ordinance. Please speak out to oppose this ordinance-dogs'lives are at stake!
Update #19 years ago
the petition was presented to the Town Board and a copy will go to the County Board of Legislators.
There was an enormous public turnout and many spoke in opposition of this ordinance. As a result, the Town Board tabled it and plans to rework it and readdress it at their next meeting in November.
Thanks to all who have signed...there is now hope that the ordinance will be less harsh to our four-footed friends and their families...
