URGENT APPEAL TO SOUTH AFRICAN HUMAN RIGHTS COMMISSION AND UNITED NATIONS HUMAN RIGHTS COMMISSION TO ACT IN STOPPING HATE SPEECH, INCITEMENT TO VIOLENCE, LAND GRABS AND MURDER OF MINORITIES BY JULIUS SELLO MALEMA
Sirs,
We, the undersigned, petition the SAHRC and the UN HRC to recognise the fact that the leader of the South African Economic Freedom Fighters, Julius Sello Malema, habitually makes himself guilty of hate speech and incitement to violence against the minority population of South Africa, who are of European descent. This is in contravention to all agreements, understanding and conventions of what constitutes Hate Speech and Racism.
The escalating farm attacks and brutal murder of members of the minority population on farms in 2016, can be directly linked to statements by Malema. In the first 6 months of 2016 farm murders in the smallest province, Gauteng, reached the count of 14 as opposed to only 4 in the corresponding time frame last year. This corresponds with a number of actions and statements made by Malema in public. Organisations such as Genocide Watch and TLU already stated that the statements by Malema undoubtedly has an influence on the escalating attacks and brutality. The statements and consequent actions we refer to are, amongst others:
- Violent occupation of private land near Seshego in Polokwane happened in the same week that Malema, who comes from that region, urged his neighbours publicly to occupy the land
- At the memorial service for Fidel Castro on 2 December 2016 he publicly blamed “white people” (in a context of racist reference) for “black” poverty, “Black” drug abuse and stated: “One day we will have an outburst” While Malema claims not to be in favour of the use of violence against a minority group, he in fact publicly calls for it!
- On 8 November he appeared in court in Newcastle after the public incitement of illegal and violent occupation of private land. Immediately after his appearance in court, in public defiance of the law, he repeated the call!
In light of this we, the undersigned petitioners, call upon your authority to recognise that we are dealing with a situation which is a serious transgression of the internationally recognised Bill of Human Rights and to take all legal and punative steps to put an end to this deplorable behaviour.
