Moratorium on Rental Licenses

There is a problem in the City of Minneapolis with proper tracking of the conditions of some of the rental properties. Decent neighbors are being forced to live with out-of-control tenant behaviors and ill-kept properties that make it damn near impossible to enjoy any kind of peace and quiet in our own backyards. Additionally, these properties are often ill-maintained causing blight and plummeting property values in the surrounding area.

Too many single family homes have been scooped up by investors who rent them out, don't screen their tenants and don't keep up with even minimal upkeep at their properties. Decent affordable homes are being removed from the market that could be purchased by new families and other first time home-buyers.

Homesteaded citizens of North Minneapolis want to see an end to that.

We believe the presence of a disproportionately large number of poorly-managed rental properties in a community made up mostly of single-family dwellings has caused irrepairable damage to the property values in North Minneapolis.

Therefore, we are demanding that the City of Minneapolis suspend issuing and renewing rental licenses on each and every property until an inspection has been completed and the property is brought up to code before occupancy.

We are also demanding a complete restructuring of the statues, laws and ordinances pertaining to owning rental properties in our city. We are pushing for more accountability for properties and landlords who prove to be problematic. We are asking to be involved in setting standards that help make our community a better place to live.

We believe owning multiple rental properties is a business and the landlord ought to be held to some higher standards of practice in keeping those properties up to code and in livable condition.
