Please sign and share this petition in an effort to make our voices heard in Hungary against the plucking of live birds in an effort to get their feathers to use in various clothing and bedding items. Although this was and is a worldwide issue, most other areas like the USA is a rare occurrence since law changes, but Hungary still continues the practice, where PETA estimates 50 percent of the down comes from.

Earlier this year, various companies were targeted regarding the plucking of live birds in order to get their feathers for down products. Unfortunately, even though some areas like the USA has complied with new regulations against this horrific and cruel act, some countries are still performing such abusive behaviors. According to PETA, Hungary is a leading offender that provides at least 50 percent of down feathers with about 45 of the feathers being plucked from live birds.

Plucking feathers from a live bird is cruel and inhumane. Consumers who love the comfort and feel of the down feathering have no idea the type of pain an animal endures in order to bring this item to the market. It was after undercover video surveillance that the issue came to light; workers were literally yanking out feathers of live geese while the animal screamed and cried in unbearable pain! The poor birds were held in some awful compromising positions while their feathers were torn from their bodies, often leaving gaping wounds and sores that never healed.

In addition to the live plucking, many of these animals were either slaughtered or placed in scalding water, all while still live and breathing. The sad truth is that the practice of live-plucking ducks and geese does reportedly live on at factory farms in countries such as China, Poland and in feather powerhouse Hungary. More than 45 percent of feathers are plucked out of geese in Hungary from experienced "rippers" who are paid well to abuse these birds!

These cruel and inhumane practices in Hungary needs to be stopped! There are other methods of gaining the comfort of down feathering from geese and other textiles rather than the cruel act of live plucking on these birds.

Hungary Government Officials in Accordance with PETA - You need to stop the cruel and inhumane practice of live plucking geese for their down feathers. There are other means and methods of providing down rather than putting the animals through such pain and suffering. More than 45 percent of your down feathers are the result of live plucking; investigate and shut down any of the farm factories throughout Hungary that thinks is an acceptable practice! Stop the abuse and cruelty of these birds; ban live plucking throughout your country!
