Demand Washington State University End Inhumane Experiments on Grizzly Bears

According to a recent report in The Spokesman-Review, “At least 15 grizzly bears have died in the past six years at a Washington State University research facility, according to recently released public records.”

Troubling questions are being raised over how WSU treats its research animals. Anyone who cares about animals should be horrified at what the public records reveal.

Two bear cubs were euthanized after almost starving to death when they were unable to go into hibernation. Five bears were euthanized for experiments requiring body-tissue samples. Four cubs were euthanized to limit the number of bears in captivity.

Perhaps the worst example is Mica, an 11-year-old female grizzly who was found dead one morning. Mica died from a ruptured uterus that sent infectious fluid into her abdomen. Researchers at WSU had been experimenting on Mica with a contraceptive called megestrol acetate which is known to cause uterine infections in dogs.

WSU admits that bears are still being given megestrol for shorter periods of time.
