Brazil: Protect the Rights of Protestors!

  • by: Kristi Arnold
  • recipient: Brazilian President Dilma Rousseff and president of Congress, Renan Calheiros

The recent crackdown on the rights of protesters in Brazil is uncalled for. With Brazil coming into a global spotlight with the upcoming World Cup, the government needs to protect protestors' rights.

Join the “No foul play, Brazil” campaign and send the government a yellow card to stop hurting its protestors.

Since June 2013, large scale demonstrations showing greater discontent with the poor quality of public services in Brazil have taken place. Police respond with excessive and unnecessary force, including tear gas and rubber bullets.

“Protesting is not a crime, it is a human right. Instead of using violence to crush protesters, the government and the security forces have the responsibility of ensuring people are safe. Any abuses must be promptly investigated, with those responsible brought to justice,” said Atila Roque, executive director of Amnesty International Brazil.

Tell Brazilian officials to protect protestors' rights and stop crushing them with inappropriate police action. The world's spotlight is soon to be upon Brazil, they should show the world that the government respects its citizens.

Dear Sirs,

We the undersigned ask that you start respecting the rights of your citizens to peacefully protest.
