2017-18 Catoctin HS Basketball Program Change Petition

For many of our children, HS athletics is a large part of personal development.  The goal of this petition is to not only assist with making both of my sons athletic career at Catoctin as rewarding and fulfilling as possible, but also every other young man that desires to participate.  I hope you will join me in making our concerns heard to the CHS and FCPS administrators.

For those of you that have not been directly involved in CHS HS basketball yet, please be aware that under the current CHS Basketball Program there is a laundry list of concerns and below are just a few compiled over the last 3 years:

  • The current coaching leadership has a combined 4 wins over the last 3 years
  • We've seen little to no evidence of a long term program focus
  • No interest in the feeder program, Catoctin Youth Association (CYA)
  • Very little understanding exhibited of basic basketball strategies and practices
  • Minimal focus on preparation and planning

These attributes have led to:

  • 2016-2017 Worst record in Frederick county - team is not competitive
  • Maxpreps Ranking 261 out of 275 Maryland basketball programs
  • Maxpreps Ranking 45 out of 51 Maryland 2A schools
  • Losing athletes/several didn't try out this year
  • Overall Record for 3 years as head coach (1 year Freshman, 2 Varsity) is 4-53
  • Freshman (2014-2015) 1-11
  • Varsity (2015-2016) 0-23
  • Varsity (2016-2017) 3-19
    • 37% less points scored than opponents
    • Average Loss Delta -28.5
    • Largest Loss -59
    • Record (against 1A teams) 2-6
    • Average Loss Delta (against 1A teams) 7.125

The Athletic Director, Kevin McMullen (Mac), has maintained is that he has not heard concerns from any parents or that anyone is considering not playing for the current coach next year.  I believe it is time for this to change and for all of our voices to be heard.

I am reaching out to you since many of you have expressed similar concerns regarding the current program and the program leadership.

Please sign this petition if you are supportive of demanding CHS Administration make a commitment to improving the competitiveness and stature of the Boys Basketball program through a change in the coaching at the Varsity and JV levels for the 2017-18 season.

Lastly, if you feel that I have missed someone or know of others that would be interested in supporting this effort, please feel free to forward and/or make the introduction.

CHS and FCPS Administration:

We, the undersigned, would like to formally express our concerns related to the direction of the 2017-18 CHS Boys Basketball Program and beyond.  The current leadership has proven to be incapable of meeting the needs of the young men, nor have they met the minimum qualifications to establish and maintain a successful basketball program.

We expect the CHS and FCPS senior leadership will show commitment to improving the culture and competitiveness of the CHS Boys’ basketball program and implore you to act in the best interests of our children, the community and Catoctin High School.

We request you immediately enter into genuine and appropriate (according to all FCPS rules) competition for both the Varsity and Junior Varsity head basketball positions for 2017-18.  This competitive hiring situation should be based on a goal of building a successful program with both short and long term goals and objectives for success, as well as a focus on character building, strategic thinking, and skills development.
