Calgary Parents for Full Time Kindergarten

In spite of all the research that has proven that full day kindergarten has many benefits to students, the Alberta Government again delayed the funding of full day kindergarten in Alberta.

A 2012 study by the Ontario government and the universities of Queen’s and McMaster found kids enrolled in full-day kindergarten were better prepared to enter Grade 1 and were more successful in class in several key areas, such as language and cognitive development, compared to kids with no full-day kindergarten instruction.

For children to grow and thrive in kindergarten, they need a few very simple things: they need care and attention from their teacher and education support professionals; they need developmentally appropriate activities that engage them as young learners; and they need time to process information and to move between activities. By laying a strong foundation, full-day kindergarten can boost student performance, access and attainment later in school

We must support our students by providing resources that ensure quality full-day kindergarten programs are available to every child.

We, as parents of students attending Calgary School District, want kindergarten to be a full day program for all Calgary students.

Dear Sir/Madame

In spite of all the research that has proven that full day kindergarten has many benefits to students, the formal PC Alberta Government has been delaying the funding of full day kindergarten in Alberta. Now that we have elected the new democratic party, I am asking the premier and the minister of education to please provide funding for full time kindergarten and also provide more affordable childcare, so parents can  return back to work and families don’t have to fall apart because of the high cost of childcare in our city.
