Of the estimated 5,000 remaining Black Rhinos, almost all are found in South Africa and Namibia. It seems that poaching doesn’t `cull’ very efficiently, so both governments offer a number of Big Game Hunting Permits to enthusiastic, ethically-challenged, rich hunters.

Namibia offers 5, which becomes a competition mostly among Americans, decorating in chic Safari and Europeans who pine for the days of the Empire, Gentlemen’s clubs and taxidermist works upon the pub walls, for the purchased right to legally kill a White and Black (Endangered) Rhinoceros.

The far-thinking organizers of the upcoming auction in Texas, on January 11th, 2014, have even tried to spin the benefits of such a hunt! That the highest bidder only gets to shoot an old male rhinoceros, they are actually providing an extremely valuable service to rhinos populations because the ‘unproductive or uninterested’ old Rhinos would be removed from dominance over the female and young, and be replaced with randy, fruitful younger males who will surely increase the steadily falling populations.

I seem to recall something about the function of the “old male” that doesn’t just include increasing the number of births, but ensured stability and bloodlines by chasing off perpetual numbers of untested and unsuitable young males and protecting his “crash” again the dangers of the natural and the human world with superior strength and courage, born of experience.

Namibia’s five permits have for the past few years, been rigorously sought after by Asians, as well. High demand in China, Vietnam and other Asian countries where the keratin-formed Rhino horn is sold at high prices, used in traditional supposed cures, carved into tokens of good luck and ground up into powder to be inhaled or infused for the sad excuse that it is an aphrodisiac or even sadder, used by young party people in lieu of Ecstasy or as a hangover cure.

The `magical’ property coveted by those who can afford more and should know better is Keratin, the indigestible composition of skin, hair, wool, quill, hoof, claw and nail of every mammal on the planet, along with various horn, shell, feather, and beak of insect, reptile and bird .

I was so shocked to discover that I was exfoliating my Keratin every night and that I should show more respect to the toenail clippings that escaped all over the bathroom  that I came up with some ideas that might help both Black and White Rhinoceri:

Firstly, let’s hold an auction where the highest bidder will be awarded a legal permit to hunt a Poacher. Two birds with one stone?

Secondly, call in the Ad boys (and girls), a few package designers, and develop a strategy to market “Genuine Black Rhino Horn Company” Chameleon Horn Bubble Tea, Terrapin Shell Balm, or if you can really afford it, there could be Baleen Plate tincture…all guaranteed to work as well as Rhino horn, but without all the fuss and International muss!

Wildlife experts estimate about 5,000 black rhinos roam the wilds of Africa, 1,795 of them in Namibia, where the auction hunt will be. The Convention on International Trade has approved a sport-hunting quota of five black rhinos annually in Namibia and five in South Africa. Permits are typically issued to a safari outfitter, who sells them to hunting clients.
