Please boycott Greg Upper/Triangle Skydiving Center (Louisburg, NC) if you don’t believe in supporting a business that is owned by someone who regularly (and often publicly) demonstrates his complete disregard for human life and people’s feelings and who has an extremely poor opinion of everyone aside from those few who think just like him. While working there for several years I witnessed, experienced, tolerated and tried to ignore his homophobia, xenophobia, misogyny, sexism, bigotry and various deplorable actions that made me regularly struggle morally with continuing to work there and make money for him. But I tried to put the skydiving above all of that and instead focus on the good until I eventually found the good completely tainted by his vile nature. I finally had enough when he let his ego get in the way of safety and, as hard as it was to leave most of my friends behind, decided to stop subjecting myself to the depravity and left. I wasn’t the first or the last. Fast forward 15 months and from what I can see, not much has changed except more people have grown tired of being disrespected and have chosen to leave as well and speak out.
The skydiving community and society at large should be an inclusive group and not one that excludes and alienates people based on their religion, race, nationality, language, gender or anything else that makes each of us who we are. It should be about overall acceptance, support and encouragement of one another. That is what I want for my life, my dropzone, for my sport, for those discovering it for the very first time and such fanatical hatred towards others has no place in it, especially not publicly. I love skydiving but if Greg Upper's business was the only place I could jump, I would quit today until a better option hopefully opened up. Luckily there options but the bottom line is that we simply should not support or subject ourselves to someone who represents so many detestable opinions and values. If you don’t condone or support such base and inflammatory behavior then I encourage you to boycott Triangle Skydiving Center. Just say no to ignorance. Our society and community deserves better.
