Stop Personal use of Town of Redwater owned Vehicles

Several months ago a Town of Redwater truck was spotted near Fort Saskatchewan Alberta at 6:40 am. It was noticed in the same area every day for weeks. When presented to the CAO she respond with Policy 407.3 that shows that Council gave her unlimited authority to allow Town Employees (apparently) Tax Free use of Town Owned vehicles outside of the Town of Redwater. It has since been determined that the Infrastructure Manager takes a Town Truck home every day. He travels over 180kms. and the Infrastructure Manager spends more than 2-hours per day on the roads outside of Redwater. Rate-payers are picking up the tab for this freebie. The Bylaw Officer also has been provided with a Town Owned Truck for commuting purposes. The Bylaw Officer lives in Thorhild County. Town owned equipment belongs to the Rate-payers not the CAO.

This violates Revenue Canada's position that states:
Personal driving is a Tax Benefit and includes:
• travel between home and a regular place of employment even if you insist the employee drive the vehicle home, such as when he or she is on call.

The Municipal government Act strictly forbids any Municipal Council from passing any Policy that does not meet the needs of the Public and or Forbids Council from passing any resolution that defies any other enactment.
Town Council, the CAO and the Town Solicitor refuse to confirm or deny that the Town Employees have been provided with TAX-FREE use of our Trucks.
It is estimated that the personal use of Town Owned Trucks is costing us between $50,000.00 and $75,000.00 annually. These costs are unwarranted and DO NOT serve that best interest of the residents of the Town of Redwater.

Update #15 years ago
With a few more signatures, I will be able to present this petition to council. Did you know that Mayor Mel Smith, Debbie Hamilton and a number of councillors just spent 4-days in Halifax on your dime? Check and follow the Redwater Advocate Facebook Page for more information and updates. Please share this petition and help stop the abuse of your property tax dollars. https://www.facebook.com/redwateradvocate/
