Spain, Let Women Choose!

  • by: Lynn Hamilton
  • recipient: Spain Justice Minister Alberto Ruiz Gallardon

Hundreds of women and men took to the streets of Spain to protest a proposed roll back of women's reproductive choices. In a move that would take Spain back to the days of the Franco dictatorship, Justice Minister Alberto Ruiz Gallardon proposes that abortion be illegal for women carrying severely deformed fetuses. He further proposes that teenagers get parental permission for an abortion.

Gallardon's restrictions, if passed, would roll back hard-earned freedoms won by the socialist party which until 2011 steered Spain's politics. Spain's current abortion policies are in line and in tune with those of the rest of Europe. It's worth noting that neither the United Nations nor the World Health Organization supports the kind of restrictions Gallardon wants.

Tell Spain not to roll back women's reproductive choices!

We the undersigned believe that abortion should be legal, safe, and easily accessible for all women.

Your proposed restrictions on abortion threaten to take Spain back to the time of the Franco dictatorship. Particularly insane is your proposal that women should bring to full term fetuses that are severely deformed. While it is true that every compassion and a full array of rights must be extended to the disabled, that is no reason to write an abortion policy that will be a terrible hardship to entire families and even local communities.

Please do not roll back women's reproductive choices in your country which are currently in tune with the rest of Europe, the United Nations, and the World Health Organization.
