Demand for installation of a 4-way stop sign at 60th Street and Avenue W

My name is Jeremy Edwards, and I am starting this petition as a concerned citizen of Lubbock. This message comes with due diligence and a direct regard for safety of the people in our community. The topic that I wish to discuss with you is one of deep importance to me, my family, and my neighbors in the area surrounding 60th Street and Avenue W. Currently, we have installed at that location, two stop signs, both of which stand on the corners of Avenue W in the opposing ends of the intersection at 60th Street. Now, the main area of concern is 60th Street itself, which is fed in from University Avenue and a fair amount of traffic comes through this area during the normal traffic hours. The intersection at Avenue W has seen, more recently, an increase in traffic as well. The reason for all the concern in my neighborhood, is the reluctance of drivers to come to a complete stop at the intersection of Avenue W and 60th Street, since the traffic coming down 60th Street does not have to stop. However, on many occasions I have witnessed people completely disregarding the stop sign all together and near-miss avoiding a side swipe or t-bone accident from the oncoming traffic down 60th Street. The frequency of these near-miss incidents is approximately 4 or 5 times a week, which is why, we as a community, are deeply concerned for the safety of our homes, personal property, and of our children and other family members in the area. My request to you and other City Council members is to consider placing a 4-way stop at this intersection in order to preserve the safety of our community, our families, children and the properties surrounding this location. We, whose signatures follow, out of concern for vehicle occupants, pedestrians, bicyclists, and families living in homes on 60th Street and Avenue W, hereby petition the City of Lubbock to improve quality of life and provide a safer environment by installing four-way stop signs on 60th Street and Avenue W at the very least and/or to utilize other legitimate traffic calming methods without delay.
