Tell Alabama School That Corporal Punishment is Not Okay

An Alabama mom wants to end corporal punishment in schools for good. And she’s calling on President Obama to help her.

Inside her daughter’s back-to-school packet from Leeds Elementary School, Wendy Chandler found a note asking each parent to allow (or not) the school to spank their child. It also stated that if a parent failed to return the note, the school would take that as a “yes.”

Chandler made her choice clear on the form and also wrote that she couldn’t believe parents were being asked to allow a school to commit violence against children. Her concern has led to a one-mom campaign to educate school administrators, as well as President Obama and other elected officials about the risks of physical punishment.

Statistics show Alabama ranks among the highest in the nation for children subjected to spanking as a method of discipline. Tell Leeds Elementary that corporal punishment is NOT okay.

We, the undersigned, agree with Wendy Chandler that corporal punishment is a violent and, therefore, unacceptable way to discipline school children.

Furthermore, not only is this method not considered to be effective in promoting positive behavior, it teaches children to accept violence as a way of dealing with others.

Though the physcial scars from this type of punishment will fade with time, the emotional scars can be long-term or even permanent.

We ask the school to pay attention to this mom's pleas and end this outdated and dangerous form of discipline forever.

Thanks for your time.
