This petition is in opposition to the U.S. Highway 17 Median Improvement Project that will extend from Waverly Rd to a point north of Archer Rd. Implementation of the concept plan will seriously affect local business and decrease property values for those businesses whose access is reduced by the construction of the restricted access medium.
Facts You Should Know
1. This is not a highway landscape beautification project but an unattractive 4-5 foot concrete median which will run most of the 1.8 mile project. The second phase will run from south of Waverly Rd to a point past the south causeway.
2. 17 U-Turns will replace all left turns - requiring vehicles to cross over two lanes of oncoming traffic to the u-turn area and then merge back into oncoming traffic with no acceleration lane.
3. There will be NO pedestrian improvements - no sidewalks and existing pedestrian crossings will be more unsafe.
4. Access to major connector streets will be limited - such as Professional Lane, Tiller Drive, Parkersville Rd and Archer Rd.
5. Emergency vehicles and large trucks WILL NOT be able to make the U-turns and many will be forced to go through residential areas near Petigru and Martin Luther King Rd
6. The project will have major economic impact on landowners and businesses and most businesses cannot be accessed from the opposite side of Hwy. 17.
7. This property will lead to more strip development and destroy Pawleys Island as we know it today.
