The Demand for Nacera Gomaa to Stay at West Chester East

The issue at play is that Nacera Gomaa is being forced to switch schools within the district midway through her junior year, which is morally wrong and unnecessary. The West Chester Area School District final redistricting plan was approved on December 15, 2014 and began in the school year of 2015-2016. At this point Nacera Gomaa was going into the 2015-2016 school year as a sophomore. Although, when the plan was set in motion, Ms. Gomaa still lived in her previous home in Rose Hill apartments, which was a part of the West Chester East boundaries. It was only until the end of her sophomore year when she moved into the burrough, which was redistricted to go to Henderson, yet she still finished out her sophomore year at East. She did so by providing her own transportation to and from school. If you would refer to the WCASD FAQ’s, updated on October 31, 2014, number fifteen states that
“Any student currently in 9th through 11th grade will be able to finish the high school they started as long as they can find transportation to and from school.” Transportation has not and will not be an issue for the matter at hand. The school did not come forth to Ms. Gomaa about the issue until after the start of her junior year. Failing to inform Ms. Gomaa about the change of schools, before the start of the school year, makes it an unreasonable request to ask her to leave in the middle of the school year. One factor that needs to be addressed is that Nacera's younger two siblings, who also moved out of Rose Hill into the burrough, have been attending their original schools as well. In this case, it is logical for the two to switch schools based on the reason they live in Henderson boundaries. The two siblings have time to grow into a new environment and create bonds and relations with their peers, teachers, and administrators. To coerce Nacera to follow the same procedure as her younger siblings would be unethical, while considering the fact she has already created bonds with her peers with whom she has been with for eleven years. To deprive a young, vulnerable girl of the school she has known and learned to love would hinder her ability to feel comfortable in the new environment and would affect her way of learning and interacting at Henderson. The last sentences on the District Overview on the West Chester Area School District Website states,
"In everything we do, our highest priority is always the students. We invite you to visit our schools and witness first-hand our students and staff engaged in the exciting process of growing and learning." The district's ‘highest priority’ is contradicted by the actions took in addressing Ms. Gomaa’s situation. Putting Ms. Gomaa in a new, unfamiliar community will restrain the way she grows, learns, and engages and her school life will drastically change for the worse. I ask, how does a school district hold this claim, yet carry out Ms. Gomaa's situation in a way that is not necessary nor the most effective? I now ask you to try and put yourself in Ms. Gomaa's place, and see how this decision impacts more than just one person and one family. This affects the community at West Chester East. The school district is inclined to take action upon the situation, but moving Ms. Gomaa to Henderson is not the best solution for the student or community. Let your voice be heard to keep our strong community intact. Please, stand up and support the evidence presented to allow Nacera Gomaa to finish out the best four years of her life, with her East Viking family.
