Stop the City of Cape Town from allowing Slide the City events during a national water crisis.

South Africa is currently facing a national water crisis and already seeing water restrictions being implemented in Gauteng. However, even during this crisis, the City of Cape Town and Slide the City have scheduled events for the summer.

The events consist of a giant 304m water slide that requires 30 - 40 KILOLITRES of clean, drinkable water per city event. Cape Town is scheduled to host events over 4 days this summer.

According to the United Nations, a human being requires 50 litres of water per day in order to prepare meals and for personal hygiene purposes to prevent diseases and retain efficiency. The average person in Africa is forced to survive with a meager 20 litres of water per day. This means that Slide the City events in Cape Town alone will be using roughly 160 kilolitres of water which could sustain an average person in Africa for 21.9 years, or a family of 4 for 5.5 years.

In January of this year, citizens of Los Angeles in California were successful in denying Slide the City their operating permit. Please sign and share this petition urging the Mayor of Cape Town, Patricia De Lille, to stop these events.

It would not only be irresponsible, but also unjustifiable to allow such frivolous use of clean, drinkable water during this time of crisis.

Thank you.

UPDATE!

All the scheduled events have been postponed! Thank you for your support.
