Alabama shelters that use gas chambers to euthanize homeless animals have until the last day of the year to end the practice.

NOTE: HOMELESS PETS WILL STILL BE KILLED BY LETHAL INJECTION. PLEASE ADVOCATE FOR NO-KILL SHELTERS!

On Thursday, the state Senate followed earlier House action to pass what has come to be known as "Beckham's Act," in honor of the dog said to have survived a mass gassing.

The act bans the use of gas chambers in shelters.

The bills require shelters using gas chambers to provide written proof by Dec. 31 that they have switched to the fatal injection procedure. The shelters also must show proof that they have dismantled the gas chambers no later than Jan. 31, 2012.

Only two Alabama shelters, in Florence and Colbert County, continue to use gas chambers.

Last year, Andalusia converted to lethal injection, and Cullman recently has done the same, according to Rhonda Parker, state chairwoman for Alabama Voters for Responsible Animal Legislation. "Talk about a huge grassroots effort," Parker said. "So many people made it happen.

"I'm just speechless. I did so much talking for 14 months about this, and now, me -- a communication studies professor -- can't find words."

The bill passed 99-0 in the Senate.

Please sign the petition if you believe as I do, that  this is a step in the right direction.
But it doesn't mean there will be less animal/pet deaths, it advocates another method of killing, albeit an acceptable, more humane method of euthanization.
PLEASE ADVOCATE FOR NO-KILL SHELTERS!
Thanking you,
