Freedom of Expression at UC Merced

This petition is in support of freedom of expression in light of the recent art controversy at UC Merced. This issue has nothing to do with personal art preferences or standards of aesthetic evaluation. This petition is also not about whether a particular art piece is worthy of inclusion in a non-juried, open exhibition. The issue is whether or not UC Merced will support freedom of expression now and in the future. A minority opinion has been allowed to voice objections to a single piece of artwork in a recent art exhibition in order to wrest control of this and future exhibitions. This minority would like to form a committee to approve or disapprove works of art for future shows. This action, if once allowed, will rule over artistic and personal freedom. It will override an overwhelming amount of student, faculty and staff support. Please read and sign this petition to protect personal and artistic freedom at UC Merced. We need to act and we need to act now for us and future generations. Don't allow this freedom to be taken away.
