Save the cherry trees outside the Med School!

These mature trees are a unique, beautiful and ecological key element to the landscape and could never be replaced by artificial, man-made objects.
We the undersigned strongly disagree with your plans to destroy the mature cherry trees at the entrance of the Medical School to build the Hospital Plaza and Transport Interchange on Vincent Drive. Destroying these wonderful trees is unnecessary and unjustifiable. These trees, which have taken many years to grow, represent a unique, beautiful and ecological key element to the landscape and their value could never be replaced by artificial man-made objects. We strongly believe that removing these trees would mean a great loss to our school, the university, and the wider community.
We urgently ask you to reconsider and take the necessary steps to ensure that any developments incorporate these trees in the plans.

The University of Birmingham announced the following today:
%u201CFurther to a meeting held yesterday between Birmingham City Council, University Hospitals Birmingham NHS Foundation Trust and the University, and subject to approval by English Heritage, a modification to the plaza design has been agreed which will allow the retention of the 5 cherry trees at the front of the Medical School.
The University takes the stewardship of its environment extremely seriously and we are very pleased that the three parties involved have been able to find a solution that allows the cherry trees to be retained, whilst keeping the key aspects of the plaza design in place.%u201D
It goes without saying that this could not have been achieved without the thousands of you who supported this cause and signed the petition! Thanks to you all we and the generations to come will continue to enjoy the benefits and beauty of these magnificent trees!
