Let's get a pedestrian/bike/horse lane on Macaulay Road, Black Creek!

Macaulay Road stretches 13 km with no shoulders or pathways for pedestrian traffic or bicycles. The road is often busy with high speed traffic. There is no bus service past the Catherwood Road area, so any of Macaulay Road's 1000 residents wanting to take a bus to Campbell River or Comox is obligated to either get a ride in a vehicle to the bus stop in Oyster River, or risk their lives walking or riding on the treacherous road. Cyclists and Horse riders often make use of the roadway on their way to the Macaulay Road area's Bear Creek Park, Bracken Park, and Macaulay Heights Park. There should be a safe option for those wanting to use bicycles, horses, skateboards, or their feet for transportation. Macaulay Road has no such option, and the lack of options for safe, green transportation tragically caused the death of a 15 year old skateboarder two years ago. The young man was killed in a horrible collision with a car while riding his skateboard to the bus stop.

"Thank you for writing this petition. My son is the one killed by that car that day while riding his longboard home from the bus. He didn't believe in using fuel if not necessary, and couldn't access a bus anywhere near our house. It's not right that youth or anyone choosing healthy green modes of transport have to risk their lives to do it. My son lost his life and there are no second chances for him. Let's give all the others that regularly out of choice or necessity have to use this road in a mode othe than vehicle, a safe route. No one else should have to die before someone does something. I asked RD to put up share the road signs and people still speed along with no thought to what happened two years ago today!!" ~Jacquie Martin

A shoulder or pedestrian/cyclist pathway on Macaulay Road would encourage healthy and green choices in transportation and would get heavy use by bicycles, horses, skateboarders, and pedestrians.

"I also lost a son on Macaulay Road. Please add a safe lane!"
~Christine Edmunds, BC

Comox Valley and Macaulay Road residents need a pedestrian pathway/bicycle lane on Macaulay Road, especially between Tammy Road and Doyle Road. There have been too many pedestrian fatalities on Macaulay Road because there is no safe alternative to travelling in lanes designed for motor vehicles.  We, the undersigned support the initiative to make pedestrian and bicycle transportation safe travel alternatives in the Macaulay Road area. We ask that the Comox Valley Regional District install a pathway along Macaulay Road.

We need a pathway that would provide a safe means of transportation for pedestrians, cyclists, and horses on Macaulay Road. The cost for this would be minimal, especially when compared to the loss of a single human life and/or possible lawsuits against the district for injuries caused to pedestrians, cyclists, horses and riders due to a lack of a safe route to transport themselves on Macaulay Road.

We have already lost too many lives on Macaulay Road.  We need a pathway and we need it soon.
